Oral health is essential for your general well-being!
A healthy mouth, apart from being involved in efficient nutrition and digestion, also enhances social interaction and promotes self-esteem and feelings of well-being. The mouth serves as a "window" to the rest of the body, providing signals of general health disorders. Good oral health is therefore as important as any other part of our body and often is neglected to the detriment of our body's total health system.
The poor alignment of teeth affects the natural cleansing flow of saliva and allows food and bacterial plaque to get caught between the teeth and at gum margins. If not thoroughly removed regularly this will cause bleeding gums, which is a sign of gum infection.
Untreated gum infection can spread to the underlying bone, which supports the teeth causing erosion and eventual tooth loss. This severe infection called periodontitis has now been positively linked to heart disease, stroke, diabetes, cancer and many others. Bleeding gums allows the bacteria from the mouth to enter the bloodstream and these can settle on heart valves and in blood vessels leading to catastrophic consequences.
It is therefore very important for your general health to have an oral health check-up either by a dentist or an oral hygienist. There are oral hygienists who have additional qualifications to practice independently from a dentist who is specialised to advise and treat gum disease. It is also recommended that young children should see an oral hygienist as early as possible to receive the correct instruction on how to clean teeth and so develop and maintain lifelong good efficient cleaning habits.
Well-aligned straight teeth are far easier to maintain with normal cleaning aids and the natural flushing process of saliva and the rub of fibrous foods against the teeth and gums are optimised. The orthodontic alignment of teeth is therefore essential in providing an environment for maintaining good oral health and related general physical health. It is recommended that children from the age of 7 years should be assessed by a specialist orthodontist to check on the development of the teeth and the growth of the face and jaws.
